What is Dark Reach?
Last updated September 25, 2026
Dark Reach is the exposure a brand gets from creator videos nobody at the brand has seen, reviewed, or approved. Watchword coined the term in 2026 to name the unreviewed part of a creator or affiliate program.
Where Dark Reach comes from
On TikTok Shop, any approved affiliate creator can post a video about a brand’s product and earn a commission on the sales. Large programs get hundreds or thousands of these videos a month. Creators post faster than a brand team can watch, so most teams review the top-viewed videos by hand and the rest go out unseen.
Paid promotion adds to it. With the affiliate video source turned on, TikTok’s GMV Max ads can run authorized affiliate videos that feature the promoted products as ads. A video nobody at the brand has watched can end up running as a paid ad.
What Dark Reach is not
- Not a count of bad videos. Most videos in a brand’s Dark Reach may be fine. It is the part nobody has checked.
- Not dark social. Dark social is sharing that analytics cannot track. Dark Reach videos are public. The gap is review, not tracking.
- Not a legal term. It describes a gap in review. It is not a finding that anyone did anything wrong.
What it can lead to
The risks in unreviewed creator content fall into four groups:
- Disclosure. A creator does not make clear that they are paid or earn a commission.
- Product claims. A creator says a product does something it has not been shown to do, such as treating a condition.
- Brand safety. The video puts the brand next to language or content it would not choose.
- Paid amplification. One of these videos runs as an ad the brand is paying for.
The FTC, the FDA, state attorneys general, and private plaintiffs have all taken public action over creator and social media content. Watchword keeps a sourced list: creator marketing enforcement actions and lawsuits.
How brands reduce it
By reviewing more of what creators post about them. Brands do this in three ways: limiting how many creators can post, sampling videos by hand, or reviewing every video with software and sending only the ones that need a decision to a person. The creator marketing risk guide covers what a reasonable review program looks like.

Common questions
Is Dark Reach the same as dark social?
No. Dark social is sharing through private channels, like messaging apps, that analytics tools cannot track. Dark Reach is about review, not tracking: the videos are public, but nobody at the brand has checked them.
Does Dark Reach mean a video has a problem?
No. Most videos in a brand's Dark Reach may be fine. Dark Reach is the part of a program nobody has checked, so nobody knows which ones are not.
